Lovely antique cabinet card photo from the late Victorian era. Featuring a stylish young woman in a hat and cloak holding maybe a parasol in her left hand.


Subject is not identified, but era is likely between 1881 and 1895, based on known info about her photographer as outlined below.


Condition is fair with all notable issues shown in photos, so please review all carefully. Issues include

Glue adhesion or other paper tearing at top of card’s reverse. Scratches and stains on reverse of card. Some warping to card (minor), edge wear, a small raised bubble at top, some

Spots and abrasions on image and card in general.


Taken by Clarence James of Alexandra Studio in Louth, Lincolnshire, England who was a noted and awarded art photographer in his time. Below is cited from a genealogy site researcher with some background info on Mr. James:


“James, Clarence Born c1857.

Place of birth Motcombe, Dorset.

1861 census has him in Malling East Peckham, 1871 census he is found living in Halifax Yorkshire aged 14 and employed as a printers apprentice.

1881 census he is noted as aged 26, single and a boarder in the household of Moria Spencer at 24 Ramsgate Louth with his occupation given as an artist in photography. Also boarding in the same household is Robert H. Plumtree (aged 26 and born in Camberwell Surrey) who is also shown as employed as an artist in photography.


At one time in the employ of Carlton & Sons photographers of 8 High Street Horncastle Lincs (wording found on the reverse of this very photo for Clarence James states “Late of Carlton & Sons”)


He was awarded the following exhibition prize medals:

London 1888

Kidderminster 1890

Tunbridge Wells 1891

London 1891

Calcutta 1891

Certificate of merit from exhibition in Coventry 1889

2 certificates from exhibition in Sutton Surrey 1891.

Address noted in The Photogrphic Journal dated 27th September 1890 as being

1 Ram’s Gate Louth Lincs.

He worked out of below 2 studios:

Alexandra Studio 1 Ramsgate Louth Lincs (no start date but trading from here by 1888 - No end date)

Alexandra Studio 9 Ramsgate Louth Lincs. (no start date but succeeded by James Mathews circa 1896).”
