A lovely vintage pair of post office letter scales made by Avery.
The scales are in brass, and are mounted on a rectangular wood (oak?) base which measures 30cm x 17cm.In the centre of the base is a brass screw, where the main pole screws in. Across the top is the balance beam which has a pointed top, and the two ends have hooks where the \'pans\' fit. This is marked on both sides \'Avery\' and measures just under 25cm alongOne pan has a central rod, and a round flat base which has 1oz written on it. This is the \'starting weight\' and additional weights would be added onto this pan. One the other side is the flat letter pan - this has an angled rod to allow letters to be slipped on and off of it easily. It comes with 6 brass weights - these are flat squares of brass that fit snugly into the depressions in the wood base. The weights are not marked with their weight. The bottom of the base is covered in felt.
In good condition generally - the corners of the letter pan are a little dented (see pictures).This design of scales appears to be quite rare for Avery - most had the tradition two pans handing from chains - I have not been able to find any others like this by Avery - and none with these types of weights.
Will post it disassembled but it is very easy to set up. Any questions please ask.
