He was a student of the engraver Georg Paul Busch (1756). Schleuen became known for the numerous city maps of Berlin he published. He also depicted views of Berlin in 29 engravings and recorded historical events in the city in individual sheets. His three sons Johann Georg (17371799), Johann Friedrich (17391784) and Johann Wilhelm (17481812) also worked in his workshop. From May 1765 to the beginning of April 1767, the writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived in Schleuen\'s house with his younger brother Karl. Here he finished Laocoon and Minna of Barnhelm.
