This rare leaf is from Revelation and the text is below with information on this very important 16th Century Bible. I have framed it sandwitched with the leaf floating between two pieces of glass so you can view from either side.The weight is almost 12 pounds and I used tripple acid free matting with an engraved title plaque.

This rare framed leaf along with one from the 1611 KJV first edition have hung in my home together since 1998 and this Bishop's Bible leaf is up for sale for the first time. On this listing you are buying the Bishop's Bible Leaf as pictured. In the background of the first photo is the 1611 leaf which will be up for sale later. Framing costs exceeded $200 each and I did two of each. I sold one of each for $550 each to recover framing costs in 1998. Being liquidated now due to downsizing for only $500.

1568 Bishops' Bible: First Edition
Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne of England in 1558 brought reform in the church. Only a handful of the bishops appointed by King Edward VI survived Bloody Mary's vicious assault and reign of terror. The Bible was forofferden under Mary's reign but when Elizabeth took over - men and women everywhere could read the Bible again.

Archbishop Matthew Parker, the dean of Lincoln and who was chaplain to Queen Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth's mother was the ideal canidate to organize and execute a new translation. He had at first supported and endorsed the reading and teaching of the Geneva Bible but became increasingly hostile toward the translation due to it's attack on the authority of bishops.

In 1563 a massive project was started. The translation was an exceptional ask done by fewer than 10 bishops. The translators relied on the 1550 Stephanus Greek New Testament, the 1528 Pagninus's Latin and the Munster's Hebrew of 1535. On September 22 of 1568 the work was introduced to the Queen and church endorsement soon followed. The Bishops' Bible has numerous carved woodcuts, and it still today is considered a landmark in printing achievement.

The Bishops' Bible, an extrodinary and stunning book, was never able to gain the popular support that the Geneva translation held in the hearts and minds of the people of England.

The Bishops' Bible is, however the second Bible published by the Church of England (the first being the 1539 Great Bible of King Henry VIII, and the third being the 1611 King James Bible of 1611). While the King James Bible has enjoyed more than a thousand times the popularity of its "rough draft"... the Bishops' Bible... it remains a fact the the 1568 Bishops Bible, with its dozens of beautiful illustrations, is much more visually spectacular than the 1611 KingJames Bible, which has no textual illustrations at all.

To make it easier to read this is the page from my RSV of the Holy Bible. It is from

The Book of Revelations, Chapter 7 mid verse 8 thru Chapter 8 vs. 10.

….twelve thousand of the tribe of Joseph, twelve thousand sealed out of the tribe of Benjamin.

9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.”

13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15Therefore are they before the throne of God,

and serve him day and night within his temple;

and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence.

16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more;

the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.

17For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,

and he will guide them to springs of living water;

and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Chapter 8

1When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; 4and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God. 5Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth; and there were peals of thunder, voices, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

6Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets made ready to blow them.

7The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, which fell on the earth; and a third of the earth was burnt up, and a third of the trees were burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

8The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea; 9and a third of the sea became blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the fountains.
