The Black Panther Party (BPP), originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was a revolutionary socialist political organization founded by Marxist college students Bobby Seale (Chairman) and Huey Newton (Minister of Defense) in 1966 in Oakland, California. The party was active in the United States with chapters in numerous cities. The core mission of the group was to organize the African American community in order to prevent police abuse, combat racial discrimination and promote the health and well being of the black population. They demanded racial equality and were not intimidated by systemic institutional racist barriers to attain it.
