What is San Mai Steel and How to MakeIt?

What is San Maisteel? San Mai steel is, in many ways, like Damascus steel—it’s well known forincredible levels of durability despite being forged and cut down into blades, and they have exceptional cutting power. The process by which San Mai steel ismade is entirely different, however, and it results in a unique set ofattributes that other varieties of steel do not have.

San Mai steel isJapanese in origin and aims to achieve specific goals in its composition andconstruction process. Its name, translated from the original Japanese, roughlycomes to mean “three parts”, which is a very apt description for the makeup ofthese blades. The makeup of the blade is rather simple; the central core of theblade (the part that becomes the edge) is made with a harder steel, whereas thetwo outer edges beyond that point are made up of a milder, more pliable steel. Its these materials that are what San Mai steel is made of.

This method ofcreating blades combines the best aspects of both varieties of steel andcreates a blade with traits few others have. The hard metal steel at the centerof the blade provides it with a sharp, sheer edge that’s perfect for slicingand cutting, whereas the milder steel surrounding it gives the blade shockresistance and helps prevent the blade from shattering, which is a commonproblem with blades made of pure hard steel. This interplay of differentelements gives a San Mai blade it’s unique and legendary reputation. The makeupof the blade is only half of the story, though. The method by which it’s madeis just as important to the creation of a San Mai steel blade.

To create San Mai blades, metalsmiths go through a specific process that give these blades theirwell-known and well-recognized properties. To answer the question of how tomake San Mai steel, we need to cover how smiths identify its components. Theway metalsmiths pick out which steel to use for the center and the outerportions is based on their carbon density—the more carbon in the steel, the“harder” it is. Once the proper varieties of steel are found, the harder metalwill be sandwiched between two equivalent slabs of the milder metal, then theyare forged to bond them together. If done properly, sharpening the blade willjust barely expose the central, harder steel to create the sheer edge, whereasthe milder, more shatter-resistant metal creates a defensive coat around it.Hopefully this in-depth explanation has helped answer the common question of“What is San Mai steel?”

Attention & Achtung, guys! ONLYSir Blacksmith Andrew has a unique “San MaiSteel” technologyWHENthe central core of the blade IS REX125 Crucible®!

Under "REX 121(Crucible) #5" video's comment on YouTube - https://youtu.be/wDkZxRSgBXU:

This knife is awesome ...I did pickup a Mr.Andrew's with a similar etching and polished blade but with a s390 corewith 95X18 stainless steel jacket and it also has the wave pattern. It alsosays 67 hrc on the outer edge along with the blade steel “s390". The onlything I don't like with mine is the detent is kind a weak but mine has a slotthrough the blade and it is perfect for doing a reverse flip, it Flys out harddoing the reverse middle finger flip.

If someone boughtfirstknife, HE (SHE) ALWAYS will BUY THE SECOND (see the last photo fromMr.vetse45220(France)and read his review!):

This is my second knife from this maker, both with the s125v blade, and they are great! The edges are as sharp as my Rockstead Chi and the edge might last nearly as long. I love both of the knives I have bought from Andrew Blacksmith.

  • Highest quality, very satisfied! Communication with the seller is great. Very recommend!
  • Additionally, under the video on YouTube this client wrote the following:

Ihave one of these. I saw it pop up on a couple months ago andIcouldn’t findanything about it anywhere.

Iwas offered a discount and decided to take a chance.

WhenI first received it and opened thebox,I was thinking Ihadbeen scammed! It is super light for its size and felt plasticity! Theblade is mirror polished but seems chrome plated compared to the Rock steadChiI own.

Itdoes have fast, smooth blade action though.

Oneday, feeling that it wasn’t what it was claimed to be, I was outside moving atrail camera and needed to trim away some branches. I used it to chop awaybranches up to 3 inches thick! The blade, which is super sharp, slicedright throughthem without a single hiccup! I just wiped offthe blade after words and went on with life. No chips on the edge and it didn’tdull one bit!

So,maybe it is the quality of knife they say it is, and the steel, is S125V!

Iam carrying both of my USA-Market knives today; I love these things! I do wishI could find more information about them though! What is their reputation inRussia? Are they considered something like Benchmade or Zero Tolerance here inAmerica or are they thought of as high-end knives? Either way I am happy withthem, and they are holding up great.

Our respond:

steel type REX 121:

CPM REX 121 is a new high vanadium cobalt bearing tool steel designed to offer a combination of the highest wear resistance, attainable hardness, and red hardness available in a high-speed steel. Its superior red hardness permits higher cutting speeds compared to other high-speed steels. Its superior wear resistance (due to the high vanadium content) helps maintain a sharp cutting edge at increased cutting speeds.
CPM REX 121 also bridges the performance gap between high alloy tool steels and caroffere materials. It may be used in cutting tools, where high cutting speeds demand higher heat resistance, but caroffere is too brittle, or in high wear tooling applications (punches and dies) where caroffere tools are too fragile.
Because of the extremely fine and uniform CPM microstructure, sulfur may be added if desired, to improve the machinability. The higher sulfur content benefits the toolmaker by allowing ease of manufacture, and the tool user by allowing easier resharpening. The CPM process ensures that the additional sulfur will not detrimentally affect the tool’s toughness.
