California US 101 route marker. Up for sale today is this California US 101 route sign. Made to the exact standards as used between 1928 and 1934 along this historic highway. US route 101 is the last surviving highway from the US system of 1926 that still retains much of its mileage in California. Originally starting in San Diego, the road heads to Los Angeles and then up the coast to San Francisco, and then even further north through Eureka and into Oregon, before entering Washington and curling around the Olympic Peninsula. An original of these, complete with the yellow logo of the California State Auto Association, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. I've seen only one CSAA yellow-logo US-101 shield, and it isn't nearly as nice as this one!This sign style was the first ever US route marker ever posted in California, between 1928 and 1934. Only the first six years of production got the distinct and ornate yellow logo, and maybe only about four of this original style of signs survive to the present day. A 101, a 99E and two 99Ws - and that's all I can think of. This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close! US-101 still exists in California, though it has been truncated between San Diego and Los Angeles, being wholly replaced by interstate 5. However, the historical old signs are quickly disappearing, both from sight and from memory. Would you like a number not seen here? Or perhaps a different style?
