DescriptionAedes Ares chill on castle is built on an oval limestone rock that flows into lake Geneva, between Montreux and Villeneuve, with a steep slope on one side and the lake and its steep bottom on the other. The location is strategic: it closes the passage between the Riviera of the Canton of vied, which constitutes the access to Germany and France, to the North, and the Rhine valley, which allows to reach quickly to Italy. In addition, the place offers excellent views on the coast of savoy, opposite. A garrison could thus control, commercially and militarily, the route to Italy and apply a toll. The first constructions go back to around the tenth century, although it is likely that this place was already a privileged military site before that date. Objects dating back to Roman times, as well as remains of the bronze age, were discovered during the excavations of the 19th century. From a double palisade of wood, the Romans would have fortified the site before in the tenth century a square tower was added. Sources of century XIII Attribute the possession of the place of chill on to the Bishop of Simon a document of 1150, in which count Humberto III grants the Cistercians of hatchet the free passage to chill on, testifies to the domination of the house of savoy over chill on. By this document we know that the owner of the castle is a gauche de boney. But this Man of blonde is more a vassal of the count than one of his officers. This is a seigniorial Dominion of the savoy in the framework of a feudal society and not an administrative domain. The house of savoy transforms the Fortress, then cestrum Quilon is, and extends it during the thirteenth century. The castle is dedicated to military purposes, but also serves as a residence for the counts. To live up to the ambitions of conquest of its owners, the castle is reinforced by the construction of a second wall and rises the height of three towers built in 1235.
