This isa famous French style theme medallion, commonly known as the \"Noble Pastorale\" : \"pastoral\" because it portrays different activities ofshepherds and shepherdesses, and \"noble\" because its central focus isyoung lords and ladies playing at being shepherds. Pastoral images werevery much in vogue throughout Europe in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance,being both highly decorative and beautiful, depicted in paintings by Fragonard or in tapestries byJehan de Brie.
