Daniel Webster - signed document byWebster, his wife Caroline LeRoy Webster and son Edward. This large format, 10x 16 quit claim indenture for land in Oakland County Michigan is dated February24, 1842. The document is a 4 page bifolium sheet with the transaction andWebster signatures on the front page. The witness attestation by the Justice ofthe Peace on the second page indicates it was signed in Washington, D.C., whileWebster was serving as Secretary of State under President John Tyler. Webster was a somewhat active but modestinvestor in lands in the Midwest. Thedocument has typical folds but is fresh and clean with strong dark signaturesand two dark red wax seals. It is aninteresting and very uncommon document relating to a little-known side ofWebster as a land investor. It is also quite uncommon to have family groupingof signatures from the earlier political leaders.

This should hold particular interest for anyoneinterested in Michigan’s settlement and history. Oakland County was just starting to seesteady migration and settlement in the early 1840’s making this this document anice early example of the carving up of large holdings into smaller parcels forsettlement.
