EARLY 19TH CENTURY FLOWER BASKETS, FLORAL URNS & MOTIF SAMPLER BY ANN HAND 1831:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Hand - 1831. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central rose urn with two birds above and a flower basket to each side, both with a flower bowl below. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn with a bird to each side of its topmost bloom, a bird to the left and right of the urn itself, both with a flower bowl beside them. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep carnation and rosebud border with a floral motif in each of the upper corners of the linen, a tree in each lower corner and Ann's name and the date of 1831 to the centre of the bottom edge.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, more noticeable in the upper left quadrant. There are also a few small areas of damage to the linen and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse,but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 20th century lacquered wood frame with gilt details. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks with small loss to the gilt detail on all corners apart from the top right.
Measures 12 1/4" x 14 1/4"(sight size) and 15" x 17" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEWORK ITSELF.
