EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY J.HAY - 1838:

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by J.Hay - 1838. Worked largely in red and green woo, this sampler, possibly Scottish, is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with a row of regal crowns with their identifying initial below. The lower section of the linen is stitched with six crowns, each with a set of family initials below with a charming two storey house beneath the central red crown with a set of family initials between its chimney and further sets to each side of its roof. The house has a floral motif to both sides with J.Hay's name and the date of 1838 above the left side floral motif and two further sets of family initials above the floral motif on the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining. There are also a couple of small areas of minor thinning. There is a blue 7 next to the topmost bloom of the left side floral motif in the lower section and a couple of blue stitches to the right of the row of letters comprising of ABCD which look to be the work of a different hand, possibly done at a later date.The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is a small amount of stitch loss to the outer red line border, a few small areas to the house and the odd stitch elsewhere. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century rosewood frame with gilt slip. The slip retains much of its original gilding whilst the frame is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, some scratches deeper than others.
Measures 8 1/2" x 16 1/2" (sight size) and 12 1/2" x 20 1/2" including the frame.

AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
