ALEX ROSS is one of the most talented and most well-known artists working in comics, his work often compared to -- and highly influenced by -- the work of American artist Norman Rockwell (1894-1978). Ross' love of superheroes is evident in all his many works, from the series he's helped create to the many hundreds of covers he's created for Marvel, DC, Dynamite and so many others over the course of his career, a career which was fully established by his work on the four-issue series Marvels (1994) with writer Kurt Busiek.
Ross' Marvels work inspired him to create a treatment for a similar "grand opus" kind of story for DC Comics, which he pitched to the publisher and soon transformed into the Elseworlds series Kingdom Come (1996), co-created with Mark Waid.Kingdom Come's popularity soon found Wizard Magazine contacting Ross with a proposal to craft a similar kind of dystopian future for Marvel's characters, which he did and Wizard published as the Earth-X Special Edition (1997). Selling out quickly and receiving much popular attention, Marvel Comics gave Ross the go-ahead to create Earth-X as its own series (1999-2000).
A truly detailed, well-conceived and well-thought out story, Earth-X contains many story events, characters and other details that would become highly influential on future Marvel writers who would adapt and/or adopt Ross' concepts for their own original works. The most notable example of such "idea adoption" is Marvel's "Inhumanity" event from 2013-2014, the event responsible for creating the character of Kamala Khan's MS. MARVEL and which saw the Inhumans releasing the Terrigen Mists upon Earth's human population in order to activate their long-inhibited proclivities for super-powers. This was Ross' idea first, developed by him as the inciting incident of Earth-X.
Character-wise, Ross not only developed unique versions of all of Marvel's most prominent heroes and villains as well as many of those lesser-known, but also created unique iterations of the characters as well. Prominent examples of each have already been, or soon will be, featured in major motion pictures from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, respectively.
Notably, Earth-X is the first part of a four-part Mega-Saga. The success of Earth-X lead to the development of three more related series, two sequels (Universe X and Paradise X) and a more recent prequel series (Marvels X).

This Variant of Peter Parker's Spider-Man made its First Marvel Movie Appearance in Sony Animation's Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023) as a member of Miguel O'Hara's "Spider-Forces."Earth-X#1/2 is a Wizard Magazine Mail-Order only Exclusive Issue.Earth-X #3 features the First Appearance of May Parker as the Venom of Earth-9997.Earth-X#5 features a Female Variant of Thor, marking the Second Overall Appearance of a Female Thor in a Marvel comic book.Earth-X #12 features the First Appearance & First Cover Appearance of the very first female Variant of the Silver Surfer, typically Norrin Rad of the main Marvel-616 continuity. In the Earth-X alternate Universe, known as "Earth-9997" within the greater Marvel Multiverse, the Silver Surfer is SHALLA-BAL, lover of Norrin-Rad. Shalla-Bal's Silver Surfer will be the character featured in Marvel Studios' upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR film (2025), which takes place entirely or in-part in a universe that is different from the main Universe of the MCU.
