Selling my personal collection of Maria Martinez and other Native American pottery pieces. Please check out my other listings … currently 5 pottery bowls from the famed potter, teaming up with different members of her artistic family. Other Pueblo artists are also featured, including potters from Santa Clara, Hopi, Acoma, Navajo, among others. This bowl is a wonderful example of San Ildefonso “black-on-black” bowl with a unique gunmetal gray finish. This process results in a highly reflective surface that resembles burnished metal, giving the bowl an intriguing (almost) iridescent quality. The design features the classic repetitive feather motif that Martinez and her team used frequently throughout her lengthy career. Signature incised on back reads “Marie + Santana”. This piece probably dates to the 1940’s/early ‘50’s.

Dimensions are approximately 7 inches in diameter and 5 inches height. See photos for more info on measurements.

It is in very good vintage condition. It has some surface wear commensurate with its age. Two areas along the rim that are discolored. One appears to be a defect in either the paint or firing . The other looks to be a residue on the lip that might be able to be scraped off. One one side, a few of the painted feathers appear blistered. There is also a small scrape across a couple feathers on same side, and there is a small white nick just below in side wall. I had that side turned to the back when displayed. Truly a beautiful collector's piece.
