Extremely Rare Antique, 1870’s Carte De Visite CDV of Annie Besant. Card has excellent clarity and is in good condition, bar some fixing to the card mount. This pose is extremely rare.
Annie Besant Annie Besant (1847 - 1933), the English theosophist who was prominent in the Fabian Society, and published a pamphlet on birth control for which she was brought to trial on a charge of obscenity. She moved to India where she lectured and became the Hindu nationalist leader. Besant was regarded in India as one of the World's greatest women, a socialist free-thinker, she left Britain for India and founded the Central Hindu College at Benares in 1898. She became involved in nationalist politics and in 1916 and established the Indian Home Rule League and became its president.
