Special Operations Executive map of France showing, by area, the order of priority for supply drops to the French resistance movements. Not surprisingly, the highest priority is the northwest, which had the highest concentration of Axis troops and was the most likely location for Allied invasion forces. The Maquis was just one of several resistance movements operating in France during the war and as well as its task of infiltrating and exfiltrating agents into enemy territory, the SOE tried to coordinate these various groups into a cohesive resistance.
