Fabulous Solid Brass Carriage Clock by Camerer Kuss & Co of London (c.1880)

Camerer Kuss & Co were a sales company founded by Johan Kamerer, a Black Forest "clock jobber" (then called a packer) in London and would go on to be famous clock and watch makers. The firm began as importers of Black Forest clocks in 1788 & became a well known firm of retailers, repairers and manufacturers. They were forced to changed the name during WW1 in 1915 because of their German sounding name and thus became Camerer Cuss & Co. They had several outlets around London including Oxford St, New Bond St and I86 Uxbridge Rd West, which is where this one originated from.

It’s straight out of the workshop and has been serviced and polished to produce this visually stunning 19thC timepiece. It works extremely well and keeps accurate time, the bevelled glass panels are chip free and it has a sublime porcelain clockface with a Roman numeral chapter ring. It has the makers mark & address below the secondary ring and is fitted with a charming French 8 day mechanism, the platform escapement can be viewed via the bevelled oval window to the top underneath the handle that swivels backwards when not in use. It measures 5”H x 3.5”W x 3”D and comes with its original dual key.
