Concerning Pay for Capt. John F. Ritter, 8th U.S. INF.The lot contains a Pay Dept USA, Charleston, S.C. letterhead (a form letter sent with a check for $153.00 to Capt. Ritter),dated Oct. 26, 1869, from Paymaster J. W. Nichols. The two other letters are written by Ritter to Nichols on Aug. 4th and Oct. 4th, 1869, acknowledging receipt of other checks for these two months.
John Francis Ritter graduated from USMA, Class of 1856, and entered the service as 2nd and 1st Lt. of the 5th US Infantry, Fort Defiance, where he was the post commander until the post was abandoned in April of 1861. He then transferred to the 15th Infantry and was soon promoted to captain. In August 1862, Ritter was appointed colonel of the 1st Missouri Cavalry and commanded a brigade in Harrison\'s Cavalry Division; remained in the volunteer service until 1864 when he resigned in Dec. of that year. He transferred to the 33rd US Infantry in 1866, then to the 8th Infantry in 1869. He died in 1872.
First action seen with Seminole Indians in 1856-57 and Utah Expedition of 1859-60. During his service, John Ritter, received brevet ranks of Major for gallant and meritorious service at the battle of Apache Canyon, N.M. under Gen. Sibley, May 1862, while in command of regiment as well as Lt. Col. for gallant and meritorious service in the capture of Little Rock, AK.
