Vintage Wrought Iron Small Tasting Ladle
Shallow Copper Bowl and Copper Rivets
Decorated Handle with Rat Tail End
Signed H. J. Heine

For your Vintage Americana, Kitchen, or Butcher Tools A beautiful small and rather dainty handmade butcher or kitchen tasting ladle. This small ladle has a wrought iron or steel handle attached to a small and shallow copper bowl with copper rivets. The slightly curved handle is flat and is riveted to the small and not very deep copper bowl with two copper rivets. The handle is decorated with interesting punched dots along the handle and an incised X near the bowl all on the front. It is stamped on the back \"H. J. HEINE\". The handle of the tasting ladle ends in a curved portion (rat tail) from which the ladle would be hung. The handle which started as a solid iron or steel rod was obviously flattened and decorated by the blacksmith who made it. The bowl is thin, round, shallow, and is made of copper. It is attached to the handle with two copper rivets. This is a great looking vintage piece which would make a great addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Unknown but we feel it was made in the mid twentieth century (mid 1900s).
  • Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Most likely made in either Lancaster or Berks Counties Pennsylvania
  • Size: The ladle measures ~7 3/4\" long, while the bowl is ~1 7/8\" in diameter. The piece weighs about 1.5 ounces.
  • Maker: H. J. Heine (a maker we are not familiar with).
  • Marks: Stamped on the back of the handle \"H. J. HEINE\"
  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nicely done wrought iron or steel, brass, and copper taster that is made in the best Americana tradition. It would be a great addition to any collection.
  • Condition: The tasting ladle is in very good condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs. The piece is clean and looks great. The shallow brass bowl is nice and shiny but could probably use a little polishing to bring out its full beauty. The surface of the piece has a few scratches and some minor dings, which are difficult to see but are there, and darker spots on the handle, which are probably some light oxidation. The bowl has scratches near the rivets and some unevenness, most likely because it was formed by hammering . Be that as it may, the piece is solid and beautiful and really looks great. Please see photos for additional condition information.
