Nice antique mid 19th Century Hudson River School/American School colorful mountainous river landscape with sailboat and figures attributed to William Thompson Russell Smith (Scottish/PA 1812-1896). Depicts a bucolic scene of a man with fishing pole and canine companion amidst a gnarly old tree with a sailboat in the background. Oil on canvas with a more contemporary frame that measures 24 3/8" by 18 1/2" and a depth of about 2"; Sight measures 19 1/2" by 13 5/8". Finely executed with still vibrant colors. Appears to be unsigned/did not find artist's signature.
Age-related wear, but overall, in very nice antique condition. Possible age-related toning to the varnish/canvas and minor age-related stable craquelure throughout, but primarily at upper left. Old reline to canvas with old stretcher that is likely original. Gilt gesso frame that is more contemporary/modern with contemporary fillet added. A couple very minor touch ups (tree area) when viewed under a black light. Pictures in this listing were taken at different times of day/evening. The colors in this painting still pop, especially when presented in the right light.
