One of the most revered icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. Three Kazan icons became the most significant in Russian history: Appeared in Kazan, Moscow and St. PetersburgIconographically, the Kazan icon is usually referred to as an abbreviated version of the Hodegetria. Such icons go back to the prototype kept in Blachernae Church in Constantinople.
The Mother of God is depicted frontally, shoulder-length, in characteristic clothes, with a slight inclination of her head towards the Infant. On one hand of the Mother of God sits the Infant Jesus Christ.
The Christ Child is presented strictly from the front, the figure is limited to the waist, only the right hand is visible with a blessing (usually two-fingered) gesture. The second hand of the Divine Infant is hidden by clothes.
In icons of the "Hodegetria" type, the Mother of God points with her hand at Christ. The Kazan image is shouldered, so we don’t see hand instructions.
