A life story fit for film, Maurice Bourke was a man of the sea, equerry to Prince Alfred and a philanderer of Princesses. The son of the 6th Earl of Mayo, Bourke joined the Royal Navy and in the late 1880’s became the Commander to HMS Surprise, Prince Alfreds Royal yacht. It was also at this time that Bourke became romantically involved with Princess Victoria of Prussia which brings us to this esteemed vesta.Hallmarked for Sampson & Mordan, London 1889 with white enamel work featuring black cursive enamel reading:

It is this dedication to the Royal yacht HMS Surprise at the time when courting Princess Victoria that has me wonder if this was a gift from the Royal Family.

Sampson & Mordan are highly regarded for their enameled vesta cases, often commissioned and awarded to only the noble.The enamel work to this case is in very good condition with some minor surface marks to silver which I say is a fine patina.

Renowned for his charismatic charm and loved by many, Bourkes short yet adventurous life was that of a true seaman and his personal vesta case is ready for its next voyage to a worthy owner.

In very good condition, there\'s slight marks to silver commensurate with age and use. No over-polishing and enamel is intact.
