Item - Napoleon, Louis, Prince Imperial, France, photograph & case, 1870\'s:
$189.73

Description - Napoleon, Louis (1856-1879), Prince Imperial, France, son of Napoleon III, black & white portrait photograph & case, photographed in the 1870\'s by \'ELLIOT & FRY\' of \'55, BAKER ST\' London, England (photographs 1 to 8). Louis-Napoleon was the only son of Emperor Napoleon III of France, & descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte (photograph 3). He grew up in Paris although later moved to Kent in England with his family, after his father had been dethroned due to France\'s defeat in the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871). He studied physics at King\'s College, London, attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, & joined the Royal Artillery. The Bonapartists proclaimed him Emperor Napoleon IV upon his father\'s death in 1873. The Prince persuaded the military to let him to join the army in South Africa in February 1879, after the commencement of the Anglo-Zulu war, despite many protest about his safety. The Prince was eager for action & was involved in numerous reconnaissance missions, before fatally leading a party into an ambush on 1st June 1871. The death of the Prince, being the main contender for the restoration of the French monarchy, caused anguish in Europe, with rumours & speculation (photograph 4).
The black & white upper body portrait photograph is on a rectangular piece of paper & shows Louis-Napoleon positioned in the centre with his head turned slightly to the right, & his upper body at a diagonal angle (photograph 3). He has combed hair, detailed facial features, a moustache, & is wearing a smart black dinner jacket, a white shirt, & a sash. The photograph\'s background is white, with a black / grey colouring around Louis-Napoleon (photograph 3). The back surface of the photograph is attached to the upper 5/6 ths of a rectangular piece of white card (photograph 2). The bottom 1/6 th of the card, underneath the photograph, initially reads \'PRINCE LOUIS NAPOLEON. KILLED 2ND JUNE 1879, ON THE HYOTOYOZI RIVER, SOUTH AFRICA.\' (photographs 2 & 4). The photographer\'s name \'ELLIOTT & FRY.\', the word \'Copyright.\', & the photographer\'s address \'55, BAKER ST\' (London), are located at the bottom of the card (photograph 4). In the centre of the card\'s back surface is a royal warrant emblem, & the photographer\'s name & address \'ELLIOT & FRY, 55, BAKER STREET, PORTMAN SQUARE, LONDON, W.\' (photograph 5). A number symbol \'No.\' & a dotted line are also visible at the bottom of the card\'s back surface.
The photograph is contained within a black oblong case (photographs 1 & 6), that has a thin gold coloured decorative line around the perimeter of its top exterior surface (photograph 7), a gold coloured metal clip situated in the centre of its front exterior surface (photograph 7), & two gold coloured metal hinges along its back exterior surface (photograph 8). The case consists of a lid & container (photograph 1), the gold coloured metal clip is opened & the lid rotated by approximately 180 degrees via its hinges in order to open the case (photographs 1, 7, & 8). The majority of the lid\'s interior is covered with a decorative dark blue fabric, & the interior of the container with a dark blue felt material (photograph 1). In the centre of the container is a line of small loops that previously would have been used to hold pens. Although the photograph & case were not originally connected, the photograph fits inside the case well, & benefits from its protection during storage (photographs 1, 6, 7, & 8). Condition - The portrait photograph has some thin line scratches, marks & discolouration marks on its surface (photographs 2 & 3). The black & white colour of the photograph has also faded over time (photograph 3). The rectangular card on which the photograph is attached includes some light brown foxing & pencil marks (photographs 2 & 5). The photograph\'s black case has some areas of discolouration on its exterior surfaces (photographs 7 & 8). However, the photograph is in good condition for its age, & the case functions well (photographs 1 to 8).
Dimensions - The height of the photograph is 10.6 cm, the width 6.5 cm, the depth 0.05 cm, & the weight 4 g (photographs 2 & 5). The length of the closed case is 16.1 cm, the width 8.7 cm, the depth 3 cm, & the weight 78 g (photographs 7 & 8). The total weight of the photograph & case is 82 g (photograph 1).
