Hoover signed this typed letter on FBI letterhead in 1948 to commiserate with C. Douglass Buck over the loss of his U. S. Senator seat to J. Allen Frear in Delaware.
Typed letter signed \"J. Edgar Hoover\" in blue ink. 1 page, 8x10¼, on letterhead from the Office of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Nov. 5, 1948. Addressed to Honorable C. Douglass Buck, United States Senator, Wilmington, Delaware. In full: \"My dear Senator: I was indeed sorry to learn that you will not be with us next year. I wanted, however, to drop you this note and express appreciation for the confidence which you have placed in the FBI during your service in the Senate, and to wish you every success in the future. If we of the FBI can be of any assist-ance to you, please do not hesitate to let us know. With expressions of my highest esteem and best regards, Sincerely yours,\". Buck, a Republican and former governor of Delaware, had been elected U. S. Senator from Delaware in 1942 but lost his offer for re-election in 1948 to Democrat J. Allen Frear, Jr. This letter was written one day after the federal elections of Nov. 4, 1948. Hoover (1895-1972, born John Edgar Hoover in Washington, DC) served as the first Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. During his 48-year term, he restored order to the department and established the world\'s largest fingerprint file and the FBI Academy. The FBI fought organized crime in the Prohibition era. Under his direction, the FBI also infiltrated the American Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan and other subversive organizations. It also conducted counterintelligence during WWII and the Cold War. By the 1970s, Hoover came under frequent public criticism for his authoritarian administration, but his power was so great that no President dared to remove him. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Lightly dented on right side. Staple holes in upper left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.See more material from these signers:J. EDGAR HOOVER See more listings in our LAW & ORDER (343) category.
