Japanese Moriage Dragonware Lithophane Tea Cup, Saucer, Super Rare Nude!

In excellent antique condition! There appears to be some loss of gold around a small portion of the bottom of the handle and a small portion of one section of the rim. There are some very tiny scratches below that portion of the rim as well as some porcelain slip trailing that occurred during the moriage during its making. Blue beads for the dragons eyes are present, and there are no chips or cracks in the porcelain. There is a tiny scratch in the saucer. Please take note in the last pictures. The lithophane is a woman reclined slightly back with one arm draped above her head.

Please zoom in on the pictures as they are part of the description. This is an antique and I do my best to present any flaws I find, but as most antiques you can expect to find some marks of time. It is still in excellent antique condition. These cups are very thin and easily cracked or broken. I love that they have survived all these years!

The raised application of the porcelain dragon and other parts is referred to as moriage.

My grandfather brought the geisha tea cups (most have the faces of beautiful geishas in the bottom) back home to my grandmother when he came home from WWll. When I was little and my grandmother showed me the geishas in the bottom I was giddy! How did they do that?!!!

I had forgotten all about the geishas in my adulthood. My grandmother passed when I was a new adult, and I had lots of other things to occupy my mind. A couple of years ago I saw a tea cup online and the memories came flooding back. And I was obsessed. Call it beginner’s luck, or my grandmother’s hand (although I can easily imagine how she would feel about those nudes!) , I now have 3 tea cups with nudes. One double and two singles.
