Japanese Type 13 Murata bayonet circa 1880 found@Okinawa:

This bayonet is an original and fairly rare Model Type 13 of the type used by the Japanese on one of their original single shot 11mm bolt-action rifles called the Type 13 Murata from circa 1880 during the beginning of the modernization period within Japan. This was purchased from a Ginoza flea market vendor stall on Okinawa near Camp Hansen several years ago, and we believe that this particular bayonet was likely one of the many obsolete weapons stored at the armory at Shuri Castle and issued to the token Okinawa Defense Force conscripts in 1945 prior to the American invasion in April of that year. These conscripts were given obsolete, last ditch, or even locally fabricated weapons such as bayonets of this type mounted onto bamboo spears. Most of these conscripts and their weapons were swept aside by the US invasion force during the initial thrusts of the Okinawa Campaign. An identical example of this bayonet can be found in the reference book “Bayonets-From Janzen’s Notebook” on page 131, item number 1. Pictures tell a thousand words. Please look carefully at the photos provided. The catch is functional, but it appears that someone used a hammer or something to strike the back end of the pommel at some point and it has been slightly peened. Otherwise, this example is rusted, with light pitting overall, but functional. Basically, it is in the kind of condition a metal object would be in if left in the humid barn of an Okinawan farmer for 60 or 70 years. While condition isn\'t perfect, this bayonet is fairly scarce, and finding any examples of this bayonet is difficult. If you have any questions or require additional photos, please ask.
