Pencil on heavy paper.Inscribed by hand (the inscription, in German, is dated 5.1.1920); the name Joseph Budka is handwritten above the inscription. A small piece of paper with Joseph Budko's stamped signature is glued to the leaf.
Approx. 24X32 cm.Joseph Budko- was born in Plonsk in 1888 to a traditional Jewish family. His work portrays his traditional background. At the age of 17 (1905) he studied in the Vilna School of Arts. As a young man of 22 he moved to Berlin. In 1912 he met noted artist, Herman Struck. During these formative years he focused on graphic arts. In 1933 he immigrated to Palestine. Following the death of Boris Schatz, Budko revived 'The New Bezalel' [Bezalel Hachadash]. He ran the school until his death in 1940.Budko was noted in all disciplines of art. His works draw from Jewish life, holidays, the Jewish village, and the beis medrash.Budko additionally reinvigorated the Hebrew ex-libris. He was the first Jewish artist to concentrate on decorating Hebrew letters.The series of engravings that Budko published for the Haggada earned him great fame. The Haggada was printed between 1916-1921. Additionally, in 1920 he printed the 'Jewish Year', with a series of 12 gorgeous engravings.He was also noted for the 7 woodcuts that illustrated the book 'Chassidische Legende' that was published in 1922.The following lots are from a beautiful collection of Joseph Budko's most famous works. In addition to documents of immense historical value relating to his studies in the Berlin Academy of Art and pictures from his personal life, and his youth in Poland and Germany.
