Made to the exact state standard that has been in use since 1967, when the route was designated by the Kansas legislature. This highway follows K-177 from Hollenberg Pony Express Station near Hanover (Washington County) to Elgin (Chautauqua County, on the Oklahoma line), through Council Grove and Cottonwood Falls. It encompasses the only remaining extensive tallgrass prairie in North America. An original of these is very rare to find scrapped; most of them enjoy their active service on the highway and the side streets.
