Item#3353 What you see pictured is part of a large calcite crystal (Minas Gerais, Brazil)that was broken into pieces. Calcite has the ability to break intovarious size pieces that are all similar in shape with 120 degree angles,called cleavage. Most pieces are smallor irregular with stepped shapes and pieces missing. Just a few piecesform these perfectly shaped specimens that are beautiful to look at,water-clear, and form rainbows, depending upon how the specimen is held to alight source.

Calcite alsohas the property of double refraction, which means it bends light and splits it up into twoimages. During World War II, optical calcite was used in airplane bombsights to help target areas on the ground. You can find more informationabout optical calcite\'s used during the war through Google.

This calcite is 95% see-through clear and 100% read through clear. The specimen has perfect cleavage and is almost a perfect rhombohedron. It has one chipped corner You will find it is fun to play with! You can see some cleavage planes on some of the surfaces, but you will not notice them when look through the specimen. With the specimen close to your eye or camera you can see distant objects more clearly. When held away from your eye or camera you will see the surface of the specimen and cleavage plains.The calcite measures 2 x 1 3/4 x 1 inches.
