Letter 1850 New York State Militia 4th Corporal L.W. Serrell, Company D, 8th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, First Division

This is an original letter and envelope to L.W. Serrel stating that has been elected as a fourth corporal of Company D under the command of James Little in the eight Regiment, Third Brigade and First Division of the Militia of the state of New York.

The origination of state militias dates back to the American Revolution and was a requirement for all eligible men, to serve in their respective militias. The New York State Militia was organized toward the end of 1849 and played a major role in the Civil War. Some regiments were involved in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Colonel William Borden, who signed the letter, is mentioned in volunteer enlistment certificates during the Civil War in 1863 – 1864. However, whether both these William Bordens are the same person cannot be confirmed. Eventually some regiments became part of the National Guard. By the turn of the century, the New York State militias were being dissolved or reorganized into other departments of the military.

This letter is in good plus condition. It has a few significant blemishes: two small tears on top edge, a stray mark, very mild foxing. Otherwise, it has a pleasing appearance relative for its age.Please inspect photos to ensure condition is to your liking.
