MASSIVE 24” Whitman & Barnes USA No. 4 1/2 BULL DOG Alligator RR Wrench c. 1900:

An epic old wrench from the turn of the 20th Century. Designed to turn large square nuts and grip pipe, this impressive No. 4 1/2 “Bull Dog”-branded alligator wrench by Whitman & Barnes measures 24 1/2 inches and weighs just under 10 pounds. Made in either Akron or Chicago, these were commonly used on railroads and in other heavy industrial settings. I believe it dates between 1897 and 1907 as it doesn’t have the same marks on the handle as shown in the illustrations in the 1908 and 1917 catalogs (pictured). In any case, it certainly pre-dates 1921, when J.H. Williams purchased W&B’s wrench production. The design proved vigorous and popular as this model was offered into the 1940s.

Tool has been lightly cleaned, cleared of most rust, and waxed to prevent further oxidation. Condition is fair, with minor pitting throughout. The Bull Dog 4 1/2 mark on one side of the jaws is clear, but on the reverse the initials W&B inside a diamond have grown faint. For any serious use, the teeth would likely need light grinding/filing to insure a proper grip.
