RARE & MINT UNSHARPENED ANTIQUESHEFFIELD STAG LOCKBACK

MILITARY CAMPAIGN WEAPON / CAMPKNIFE / FOLDING HUNTER DIRK

by MORTON & SONS /SHEFFIELD / c.1874 - 80’s / PUBLISHED

This mint condition extended blade lockback folding dirk knife is described in The Heritage of English Knives by DavidHayden-Wright on page131 as a Morton, Sheffield quasi-military folding knife; apattern made for Military private purchase as a campaign knife, camp knife, andhunting knife. This side arm Campaign pattern can be used in the open locked positionas a full-length combat knife, for dressing big game, and for clearing acampsite. In the folded position the shortened blade can be used for camp choresand as an eating utensil. It is very rare to find any multipurpose utilitarianmilitary campaign / sportsman’s knife from this period in mint, unsharpened condition. This piece was made by Morton & Sons, Sheffield, circa 1874 - 80’s.

HISTORYOF WILLIAM MORTON & SONS

This firm begins with Joseph Morton Sr.,a cutler on Falcon Court, Fleet Street, London, who died in 1828, and the firmwas taken over by his 2 sons, Joseph Morton Jr. (b.1801 – d.1866) and GeorgeMorton (b.1803 – d.1850s). George Morton described himself as a Master cutlerin 1851, living and working at No. 39 Cheapside, London, but his partnership withhis brother Joseph Jr. ended in 1852. George Morton Sr. had a son, also namedGeorge Jr., who continued the trade at the Cheapside location after his father’sdeath in the 1850’s. Geoge Morton Jr. later died in 1878 at aged 44. However, GeorgeMorton Sr. had another son, his youngest, named William Morton who married theyoungest daughter of James Crawshaw Ragg (b.1814-d.1887) in 1869, who Ragghimself had inherited the cutlery firm of John & William Ragg Ltd. upon thedeath of his older brother William Ragg who died in 1865 and had never married. Thus, William Morton was already working in Sheffield when he acquired the Sheffieldscales trademark of another cutler Anthony Rotheram in 1874, who had been a longtimeemployee of Joseph Rodgers and started his own firm in 1852. He eventually movedhis firm to Rockingham Street where he occupied Old Rockingham Works. AntonyRotheram died in1876 at aged 60 and William Morton Sr. became his successor at theRotherham’s Old Rockingham Works, Sheffield. However, William Morton Sr. sufferedill health for several years and died in 1889 at aged 43, and William Morton Sr’sSons, Willam Morton jr. and George Morton Sr. (who also had a partnership withthe Ragg cutlery firm) took over the Rockingham business in 1889.

This knife has been described as a PublishedFolding Lockback Campaign Bowie Knife c. 1870-80s. Sheffield folding Dirks withthe extended blade pattern are known as early as having W crown R markings (1830-37)and one example of an 1840’s full sized Bowie hilt with a dagger style extendedblade is known. This piece has a German silver folding crossguard and ovalpress button release that locks the blade inside the hilt and releases the lockblade when pressed. The locking lever is at the end of the backspring and is flushwith the scales that have cutouts on both sides that allow the thumb to pressdown and release the locked blade from the open position. Overall, the knife is12” long with a 7 5/16” clip blade with a false edge. The weight of the knifeand sheath is 8.1 ounces or 231 grams. The weight of the knife alone is 6.7 ouncesor 191 grams. The blade flares slightly from 5/8” wide at the ricasso to 7/8”near the end with the locking hole adjacent to the median ridge that snaps whenlocking the blade. The ricasso is Maker marked MORTON, & SONS, SHEFFIELD(no England mark) in 3 lines. The backspring is made from 3/16” stock and theblade is 1/8” stock. This approximately 135-150-year-old knife has nosharpening, wear, repairs, or alterations, and remains in mint condition. Theblade retains all of its signature Sheffield crocus of Iron mirror polish. Itis extremely difficult to photograph a blade with 2 slanted panels, as one panelusually appears dark and the other one shiny, and in some images the blade justlooks flat silver color due to the lighting. I took several dozen  images to try to capture the mirror polish by photographingthe reflective images shown. As expected, all antique knives show somenaturally occurring aging marks called spidering that take a century to form (verylight surface pitting) that creates scattered surface marks. The blade front tiparea has some very light naturally occurring age marks, and the back side tiphas fewer of the very light naturally occurring age marks. There are a coupleof tiny age marks at the tope edge and one minuscule spot of pitting with scratchessomeone made to remove the black coloration that can be seen with magnification.None of these very minor normal aging marks distract from the overall rare mintcondition of this 1870’s knife. The select antique stag scales are perfectlymatched in color and texture and are in untouched condition. All-naturalmaterial shrinks over time, tiny cracks from the pin hammering pressure sometimesresults in a pin crack. The scales are perfect save one hard to see hairline surfacecrack on the top of the stag at the rounded end but is visible in the cream-colored vertical edge. The liners are milledbrass, a feature found on quality knives. The sheath shows no wear and only smallareas of slight discoloration from handling. The appearance could easily beenhanced by treating the leather with conditioner to blend in any slight coloration, but it would darken the nice medium tan original patina, so I have left it inuntouched condition.

This rare mint overall condition is alsoa published piece from a famous collection. This would be perfect for anyKnife, Dirk, Dagger, Bowie, Folder, Hunting, 19th Century, Military,Sportsman and an investment for a discerning collector.
