Moctezuma Ilhuicamina

Moctezuma I, whose second name, Ilhuicamina, means 'he who shoots an arrow into the sky', was crowned ruler of the great Aztec Empire in 1440, thereby ushering in the golden age of the Aztecs.

During his reign, which lasted for nearly thirty years, he shaped the image of the Aztec state that we are familiar with today - a state rich in culture and mythology.

The capital city, Tenochtitlán, blossomed under his rule.

He constructed dykes and dams, erected temples and built palaces and schools.

Craftsmen travelled from afar to decorate his constructions with all imaginable splendour. In this way, the origins of today's Mexico City were already acquiring the dimensions of a true metropolis, with close to 200,000 residents in the time of Moctezuma I.

The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Moctezuma I Limited Edition 87 made of Au 750 champagne-tone gold is dedicated to this supreme ruler of one of the most unusual cultures in world history.

Insignias of royal power

When Moctezuma I ascended the throne as the fifth king of Tenochtitlán, he was already a respected statesman and warrior with a brilliant reputation.

According to chroniclers, his coronation was accordingly elaborate.

He was guided in great state to the high temple, where he was given the turquoise coloured, red-bordered royal cloak, the xiuhtilmatli, and a diadem decorated in gold. The chroniclers describe how the celebrations, dancing and ritual sacrifices lasted for many days, as did the visits from neighboring kings, who brought valuable gifts, fine feathers and jewels, precious

fabrics and weapons.

Among these gifts, there would almost certainly have been amazing works of Aztec decorative craftsmanship featuring one of their favoured precious stones: turquoise.

The cap of this edition is decorated with a turquoise mosaic in Aztec style, while the barrel is made of special cocobolo wood from Central America. The mosaic on the cap is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail and an artistic sensibility that means each of the 87 pieces in this edition is slightly different. The mosaic is refined by gold inlays with jade cabochons and by a central Aztec motif symbolizing the 'five suns' creation myth.

The gold is specially treated to create a vintage look similar to the distressed appearance often found in ancient artefacts.

Patron of art and engineering

The reign of Moctezuma I was characterised by impressive building projects and conquests. One of his first great projects was a dyke that extended over 10 km through Lake Texcoco, protecting the city of Tenochtitlán from disastrous foods.

Because the salt content of the lake was too high even for agricultural irrigation, Moctezuma I also ordered the construction of an aqueduct to provide drinking water. Both projects are among the greatest hydraulic achievements of the Aztecs. Moctezuma I was also said to be far-sighted regarding economic and military matters. He opened up trade routes over 1,500 km long and led his highly organised army to the coasts of both oceans. The atlatl, an Aztec spear-throwing device that propelled spears over long distances and with great penetrative force, inspired the design of the cap with its thread-wrapped handles.

The spear-shaped clip, refined with an engraving of a Central American quetzal's feather, is crowned by triangular-cut green jade, and the upper part of the clip is reminiscent of the Aztecs' traditional nose ornament.

The shape of the cone, refined with a hammer finish, is based on an Aztec sacrificial knife with an obsidian blade.

The barrel is made of precious Central American cocobolo wood in reference both to the material used to make the ala and to the famous El Sargento tree in Mexico City, which was planted during the reign of Moctezuma l.

Kernel of a world-class city: Tenochtitlán

According to tradition, the Aztecs founded the city of Tenochtitlán in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco. As promised

by their god Huitzilopochtli, this is where they found, after almost two hundred years of travelling, an eagle eating a snake

while sitting on a prickly pear cactus. This image - still present in the coat of arms of Mexico - establishes the pillars of

the Aztec worldview. The eagle and snake stand for heaven and earth. The eagle is also the symbol of the sun god, and

the red prickly pear represents the human heart, which is sacrificed to the sun. It is said that, with this sacrifice, men follow

the example of the gods, who sacrificed themselves to enable the creation of the fifth age of the world. The handcrafted

Au 750 solid gold nib of the Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Moctezuma I Limited Edition 87 is adorned with a fine

engraving inspired by the Aztec glyph for the heart, a symbol for sacrifice. A further glyph, engraved on the forepart,

represents the second name of Moctezuma I: Ilhuicamina (meaning 'he who shoots an arrow into the sky').

Consecrated to the gods: Templo Mayor

Moctezuma I oversaw the renewal of the Templo Mayor, which he reconstructed magnificently and provided with rich sculptural decorations.

A hundred years later, chroniclers still marvelled at the gigantic, pyramid-shaped double temple dedicated to the gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc. Only ruins remain of the temple, but the 'stone of Moctezuma l', found during excavations on the south of the temple in 1988, has been preserved. Measuring 2.25 m across the middle, this monolith bears a carving of the face of the sun god Tonatiuh surrounded by symbolic jade stones and rays extending outwards, representing the sun and the points of the compass. The mother-of-pearl Montblanc emblem on the cap top is embedded in an engraving of an Aztec sun disc, which honours not only the stone of Moctezuma I but also his diverse architectural constructions and ornamentation in the cities of the Aztec realm. The four stepped gold bands on the barrel are a special reference to the Templo Mayor, as is the edition's limitation to 87 pieces. This refers to the year 1987, when the Templo Mayor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
