Makonde Ebony Shetani Carving by Morris Mbangwende from Tanzania:
$374.88

This is a one of a kind Makonde Ebony Shetani carving by Morris Mbangwende from Tanzania. The Shetani style is an expression of Makonde mythology and spirits. The carvings are usually abstract and purposefully distorted to depict the spirit realm. Note the mouth is twisted to the right and the nose is twisted to the left.
About Mpingo Wood:This beautiful piece was carefully carved from Mpingo wood, which we refer to as \"Ebony\". The wood has very fine grains and is incredibly dense, making it difficult to carve, but when finished they will stand the test of time. The craftsmen typically work around any imperfections in the wood and often incorporate them into the final form.
About Provenance:We personally commissioned this piece with Mr. Mbangwende while living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1998-99. We intended on selling this and several other museum quality pieces back in the U.S. when we arrived home, however life got in the way and this carving along with all of the others ended up sitting in boxes on a shelf for 25 years.
We always attempted to get the artists to sign their work, however not many did. We consider the signed pieces to be extraordinary and therefore more valuable. Even though this is a somewhat small piece, it has a big name behind it. Mbangwende primarily produced smaller carvings, and almost always in the Shetani style. We are proud to have one of his pieces, and we will be very sorry to see it go.
If you want to learn more about Makonde carving, I suggest reading \"A Host of Devils- The history and context of the making of Makonde spirit sculpture\" by ZacharyKingdon. On the first page you will see a picture of Chanuo Maundu and none other than Morris Mbangwende as they work on a carving. (note he told us he spells \"Morris\" with two \"r\'s\", and we have seen it spelled that way in other documents, but they spelled it with one \"r\" in this paper. Nevertheless, this is the man Dimensions: 6.5\"H x 3\" x 3\"Weight: 13.4 oz
