Marc Hempel is both one of comics\' great stylists and great humorists, and fully knows he\'s under-appreciated for both. The bulk of Naked Brain is a series of one-page gags, sometimes strips, less often a single panel, informed by and infected with a dour cynicism that will seem too bleak to many. The cartoons possess the rare ability to expose the nub of a situation in a few pen strokes, though, and while Hempel doesn\'t always operate in the same social comment territory, comparisons with Jules Feiffer are not misplaced. The one-pagers are backed up by short Tug & Buster strips. While excellent in their own title, they here lack breathing space and are vehicles for gags that could have been applied to anyone. There are also sketchbook pages...While some of the material ranks amongHempel\'s best, and therefore the best funny comics, there\'s too much filler surrounding it, so tread carefully.--The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide
