Mata Ortiz PotteryArtist: Martha Hernandez - First GenerationHand Made - Rolled Coil & Pinch Method - Sanded Smooth - Then Hand PaintedHand PaintedA beautiful turtle has a iguana - lizard - gecko on its back. This precious piece is made by Martha Hernandez who lives in the village - pueblo of Mata Ortiz. Pretty multi color piece with geometric Paquime\' design. All pieces are totally hand made clear down to the gathering the clay - rinsing the clay to make useable - coil rolling the clay to start building the piece. Once piece is to that point then the potter starts the polishing getting ready for the hand painting. Even small pieces take a lot of time before the finished product is ready. All the potters are so very proud of their creations and rightfully so.Artist Signed On Bottom Of PiecePiece Is 2 Inches Tall x 4 Inches In Length - 3 Inches Wide Greenery & Riser Are Not Included (Display Only)I personally hand selected this gorgeous olla from the artist. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid 1970\'s, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it and the pottery was able to penetrate the U.S. markets thanks to traders. By the 1990\'s, the pottery was being shown in museums and other cultural institutions and sold in fine galleries. The success of the pottery, which is sold for aesthetic rather than its utilitarian value, has brought the town of Mata Ortiz out of poverty, with most of its populations earning income from the industry, directly or indirectly.Be Sure To View All Photos Shown For Views Of The Beautiful Work. You Will Want To Add This Beauty Into Your Collection - Sure To Become One Of Your Families Heirloom PiecesInternational Buyers WelcomeAll Forms Of PayPal Payments AcceptedOur Studio Is Pet Free, Smoke Free, Very CleanWe Do Offer Combined Shipping Costs On Multiple Purchases.
