Mazon Creek Fern Alethopteris Serlii Fossil Positive & Negative #18174: $249.99
template Up for sale is an Alethopteris Serlii fern fossil. This is the largest and nicest fern fossil I’ve personally seen from the Mazon Creek fossil beds in Illinois. This piece measures 7 1/2 in length.
The Mazon Creek fossil beds are found near Morris, Illinois. Fossils from this region are preserved in ironstone concretions, formed approximately 309 million years ago in the mid-Pennsylvanian epoch of the Carboniferous period. Concretions from this area preserved both hard and soft tissues of animal and plant materials, as well as many soft-bodied organisms that do not normally fossilize. The quality, quantity and diversity of fossils in the area, known since the mid-nineteenth century, make the Mazon Creek deposits important to paleontologists, in attempting to reconstruct the paleoncology of the sites. We have a variety of fossils available so be sure to check out our other listings!
