$450.00

Original, hand-painted animation cell by artist Jules Engel, produced by United Productions of America (UPA), labeled 17W, circa 1960s
Mr. Magoo, wearing a top hat and coat tails, is dangling by a rope held by his red head nephew, Waldo.
Mr. Magoo - J. Quincy Magoo is a fictional cartoon character created at the UPA animation studio in 1949. Voiced by Jim Backus, Mr. Magoo is an elderly, wealthy, short-statured retiree who gets into a series of comical situations as a result of his extreme near-sightedness, compounded by his stubborn refusal to admit the problem. However, through uncanny streaks of luck, the situation always seems to work itself out for him, leaving him no worse than before. Bystanders consequently tend to think that he is a lunatic, rather than just being near-sighted. In later cartoons, he is also an actor, and generally a competent one, except for his visual impairment. Magoo episodes were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film three times, and received the award twice, for When Magoo Flew (1954) and Magoo\'s Puddle Jumper (1956). In 2002, TV Guide ranked Mr. Magoo number 29 on its \"50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time\" list.

In the 1960s, UPA turned its attention to television, andbegan producing the series Mister Magoo for the character. Because UPA had shutdown its animation studio in 1959, the animation for these cartoons was done byJack Kinney Productions and Larry Harmon Pictures.

The cartoons suffered fromvarying character designs and choppier animation, due to rushed productionschedules. Magoo\'s nephew Waldo (voiced, as in most of the theatrical cartoons,by Jerry Hausner) was seldom seen with his uncle, now appearing in his ownepisodes, introduced by a brief phone conversation from Magoo\'s point of view, which acted as a teaser.

The Waldo episodes also featured a slick-talking conman named Prezly, and always ended with a return to Magoo saying, \"Oh,that Waldo and Prezly. What\'ll they be up to next? Hee hee hee!\"

Magoo\'s houseboy Cholly (i.e., \"Charlie\") tookup a lot of Waldo\'s slack. Cholly was an Asian stereotype with huge buck teethand comically fractured English pronunciation. Despite his stereotypedappearance and voice, he nonetheless usually plays straight man to Magoo\'sshenanigans, rather than being a source of humor on his own. He is the\"sane\" one of the pair. His resourcefulness often saves Magoo fromdanger.

Jules Engel (1909-2003) was a filmmaker, painter, sculptor, graphic artist, set designer, animator, film director, and teacher. He is perhaps best known for his work as an animator for Walt Disney and other Hollywood studios, contributing to many films including Fantasia and Bambi, as well as animated cartoon television shows such as Madeline and Mr. Magoo. He was an instructor and mentor at California Institute of the Arts in the film and video department for over 30 years.
In his lifetime, Engel created 33 personal films, 39 editions of lithographs, hundreds of paintings and sculptures beginning in the 1930s. In 1945, Hazel Guggenheim arranged for his first exhibition at the Frederick Kahn Gallery in Los Angeles.
In 1969, Engel became the Founding Director of CalArts Animation Program; subsequently becoming the Founding Director of the Experimental Animation Department in the School of Film and Video. Engel\'s department became known for its animation teaching. CalArts, located in Valencia California, is the first higher education institution in America to offer a formal degree in animation.
In 1973, Engel self-published a collection of typographic art, entitled \'Oh\'. During the 23rd Annual Annie Awards, in 1995, he received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifetime contributions to the field of animation. He was also recipient of five Golden Eagle awards, the Fritz Award, the Norman McLaren Heritage Award, and the Pulcinella Award for career achievement.
