A U.S. dime (10 cent piece) measures 17.5 mm in diameter.Featured lot consists of eleven small \'pickers\' from the California goldfields. Some are mostly quartz, others quite rich, but every piece shows gold. Combined, they weigh a total of 11.9 Grains Troy, i.e. (.77 gram). By no means large, 2 to 4 mm long on average, and not a good investment (you\'re not buying bullion), yet, fans of Au in it\'s raw, natural state (as found in nature) should enjoy this small lot of high-grade ore samples.

UNTAPPED POTENTIALDeep, expansive alluvial fields, fans, plains, valley floors, et al usually cover many miles of linear distance. Such spaciousness means untapped potential in far-flung places where prudent prospectors, through diligent field search, may discover un-searched ground worth mining. In virgin placer deposits, the depth of an ancient channel, the compaction degree of the alluvium, and the size and density of boulder packs often make thorough testing a virtual impossibility. In some ways, this applies more to operators using heavy equipment than it does to artisanal, small-scale miners who are known to find ingenious ways of moving massive rocks. Without hesitation, they\'ll climb rugged, vertical terrain to hand-test cemented ground suspended in high terrace gravels. Small scale miners fearlessly tackle the dubious job of climbing, crawling, and digging far down into the bowels of the earth so they can excavate cemented and compacted clays or caliches by hand, one spade-full, one heavy, awkward bucket at a time. In the case of deep channel deposits, with who knows how many feet of sedimentary overburden layered on top, far below, untested alluvium lies buried from sight close to bedrock. Even armed with large excavators, Cats, and loaders, such earth factors will challenge operators who attempt to test for pay in deep, virgin ground. Hand-windlassing dirt up from the depths, the old timers often sunk vertical shafts a hundred feet or more as they labored to find deep leads far below on bedrock. Historical accounts tell of fatalistic miners, impervious to danger, encountering rich gravels and drifting across bedrock following the lead. Many must have perished in cave-ins or from asphyxiation. In gold country, one never knows what kind of values lie 5 feet inside an 80 foot deep stretch of remnant channel whether in the bottom of a gorge or stranded high above on a mountainside. The \'giants\' of yesteryear blasted away much of the best ground, but failed to get it all. No one can say what they left behindwithout running tests. The same question must be pondered as one surveys a twenty mile long stretch of river-bottom once hammered by bucket-line dredges. What was unintentionally left behind? What values did they vacate on bedrock lost through mechanical or operational deficiencies? In defense of the old timers, miners today are just as inefficient, in some ways, as were our predecessors 100 years ago. Were coarse nuggets classified and discarded? Are there large expanses of un-worked channel lurking at depth covered with tailings or boulder piles? Questions. Always more questions for the tired, ignorant prospector.
