New York Brooklyn Battery Tunnel route marker.Up for sale today is this Brooklyn Battery Tunnel route sign. Made to the exact 1950 state standard, as used at the original opening of the tunnel. the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel was first proposed in the 1920s and finally built in the 1940s for an opening date of May 25th, 1950, carrying four lanes of traffic under the East River. at nearly two miles long, it is the longest continuous vehicular tunnel in the United States. An original of these is very rare to find; just about all of them have long since vanished, to be replaced with a similar sign but of a larger size, with modern reflective sheeting and fonts. The sign is flat printed on steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts. It weighs about 2 pounds, 14 ounces, and has been faithfully rescaled from the 16x16 inch size for the early years to a more manageable 12 by 12 inches. (if you are interested in the larger, more modern variants, I can certainly make that too!). it is a non-reflective sign - perfect for ordinary display, indoors or outdoors. (if you would like a larger size version, please ask as I can certainly make one!)This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection.
