Old Reliable - HMT Olympic Canvas Shadowbox by Artist Craig Tinder

This Limited Edition Fine Art Print autographed by Artist Craig Tinder depicts "Old Reliable" - the nickname for the RMS Titanic's sister-ship, the Olympic, while in pursuit of her would be attacker, the German U-Boat U-103 on 12 May 1918.

This large 30" x 20" (76.2 cm x 45.7 cm) gallery-wrapped shadowbox canvas print comes ready-to-hang with a solid, 2" Black stained wood frame and includes an embedded fragment from the pitch pine deck from the RMS Olympic and mounted on a beautifully engraved metallic data plate which outlines the details of the print and relic for all viewers to study. As an added touch, each canvas art piece is hand-signed by artist Craig Tinder and includes a metallic, Certificate of Authenticity for added provenance and collectibility.

The Story Behind the Print:

12 May 1918, HMT Olympic, known as “Old Reliable”, was taken out of luxury liner service to provide transatlantic troop transport. Freshly camouflaged and carrying thousands of American Troops, she was the largest ship pressed into service at the time. That morning, she was shadowed by the German U-boat, U-103. As the U-boat prepared for a stern torpedo shot, Olympic hit the U-boat with her deck gun. With the submarine immobilized, the Olympic continued the attack and the 46,000 ton ship rammed U-103. “Old Reliable’s” propellers cut through the hull of U-103, sinking her within minutes. U-103 was the only warship sunk by a passenger merchant vessel in World War I.

About the Relic:

In 1935, the Olympic met a heartbreaking fate in the scrapyard, but her legacy lives on through the remarkable relics that have been passed down through history. Now, you have the opportunity to own a truly unique piece of the past as each art piece includes an original pitch pine wood deck fragment from the legendary ship itself. This one-of-a-kind relic was sourced from the Haltwhistle Paint Factory in 2004, where much of the ship's deck was repurposed as office floorboards, and now it can be yours to cherish forever. We acquired these deck pieces directly from K. Jackson, the former facilities contractor at the Smith & Walton Haltwhistle Paint factory.
