Handsomeoriginal antique engraving of action during the Battle of FortDonelson, fought February 11-16, 1862 near the Tennessee-Kentuckyborder.

  • This dramatic view wasengraved from a drawing byFelix Octavius Carr Darley. It is titled Capture of FortDonelson, Tenn. Chargeof Gen. Smith's Division.
  • The image area measures 12.8 x 18.8 cm [5" x 7½"], and the engravingwaspublished in Volume Two ofRobert Tomes' TheWar with the South, New York: Virtue & Yorston,1862-1867.
  • The printed text in the lower margin reads: "Enteredaccording toact of Congress AD. 1865, by Virtue & Yorston Co. in theclerk'soffice of the district court of the UnitedStates, for the southern district of N.Y."
  • Condition: It is in excellent condition,bright and clean, with norips, tears, or creases.It is printed on a heavy paper, with original tissue overlay, and isblank on the back,with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feelfree to ask any questions.
  • Artist Felix Octavius Carr Darley was an American painter knownfor his illustrations in works by well-known19th-century authors, including James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens,Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
  • The engraving's subtitle refers to the assault on the Confederateentrenchments,led personally by Union General Charles Ferguson Smith.
  • The Union's capture of the fort elevated BrigadierGeneralUlysses S. Grant from an obscure and largely unproven leader to therank of Major General, and earned him the nickname of "UnconditionalSurrender" Grant.
