The British first used socket bayonets around 1700, and by 1710 the requirement for them throughout their colonies outgrew their manufacturing capacity. In 1715 they contracted with a Dutch or German (Danish?) maker to supply bayonets. The 1715 bayonets were substandard but this one was were part of a second order delivered 1740-41. Most were placed in storage by the British.
Made to fit German or Dutch muskets used by the British, many were deemed substandard compared to the early land pattern Brown Bess bayonet and placed in storage until 1754 when the 7 Years Wars began in Europe. They were then hand numbered by ordnance engraver William Sharp and about 3,000 shipped to colonial America with muskets for use by state militia in the French and Indian Wars (1754-63). Governor William Shirley ordered these for his Massachusetts colonial troops and North Carolina received some as well. All of this is recorded in British Ordnance records. Many later saw use in the Revolutionary War by Virginia and Carolina troops and are found in colonial archaeology sites.
The Hessian mercenaries who fought for the British also used this type in the Revolutionary War.
There were two types of mortice cuts apparently for two musket types. I have also observed various alterations in apparent efforts to fit these to various muskets in use at the time.
This is not a reproduction, but part of a small cache of unissued weapons found in original 18th century grease. You can see the hand tool and grind marks clearly and the construction is completely hammer forged and ground.
Yes! Reproductions of this type exist as shown in last three photos comparing the reproduction to one of these. The repro sockets are not marked, blade is thin, and made from thick steel pipe instead of thin rolled sheet iron on originals.
Photos 3 and 4 show the nasty antique black grease inside the socket. It's preserved these for centuries.
Reference Ian Skennerton's book on British and Commonwealth Bayonets pp. 31-35. These bayonets are documented in many Revolutionary War reference books such as Neumann, Goldstein, and Priest.
This hand numbered example survived in pristine condition. I have a few of these in my collection in various conditions, each with an individual engraved number.
The six sided 12" flat blade is sharp and the socket is 2 3/4" in length. The steel is high quality for the period although the design is rather delicate.
Photos show the Dutch brass fitted musket the bayonet was made for in a book of French and Indian wars weapons.
I have one reproduction of this type as shown in comparison photos. The socket of repro is made of thick pipe and it's circumference is too small for an original musket barrel. The blade is flimsy on the repro and not numbered. The repro was likely made in India or Pakistan. This bayonet listed was 18th century Dutch made and found in Maryland.
