This booktraces the origins of Bomber Command and surveys its early history withparticular emphasis on the development of its aircraft.

The oldbiplane “cloth” bombers which the Command inherited on its formation in 1936are fully described, together with the early generations of monoplane typeswhich followed them – not forgetting numerous fascinating projects which neverleft the drawing board. The Command’spre-war expansion is dealt with, and separate chapters tell the story of itsoperations, from the first bombing and leaflet-dropping raids of September 1939to the beginning of “area bombing” in December 1940, due emphasis being givento the fortunes of the various bombers in battle. Rounding off this carefully researched volumeis an in-depth study of contemporary bomber camouflage and markings, includingeight pages of specially prepared full-colour artwork, which will be ofparticular value to the modeller and historian alike. A second volume is planned, covering theperiod 1941-1945.

This1975 1st edition hardback publication is in very good overallcondition, especially considering its age.The pages are tightly bound and are free from tears, creases, andsignificant marks. The dustjacketdisplays some light rubbing and minor knocks to the edges and corners (seephotograph). The book runs to 144 largeformat pages (28cm x 21cm) and is very well illustrated throughout with generalarrangement drawings, colour illustrations, and photographs.
