RARE Civil War US 2.6" "Baby Hotchkiss" Artillery Shell Base Cup - Richmond, Virginia. Baby Hotchkiss shells are extremely rare.Hotchkiss shells were assembled in 3 parts - the nose, a lead sabot (driving band) about 2/3 of the way back and a base cup. When fired, the base cup would be pushed forward by the expanding gas, forcing the lead sabot more tightly against the rifling of the barrel, to allow the shell to better engage the barrel rifling, imparting spin to the shell, which better kept the shell from tumbling in its trajectory.
