Lars Gunnar Sillén,

born July 11, 1916 in Stockholm, died July 23, 1970, was a Swedish chemist. Sillén

defended her dissertation in 1940 in analytical chemistry at Stockholm

University, and from 1950 was professor of inorganic chemistry at the Royal Institute

of Technology. In his early career, he mostly worked with X-ray diffraction as

a method of determining mineral phases, especially in the case of bismuth

compounds. He then became an internationally known solution chemist. Several of

his publications are considered standard works in geochemistry, and his work

influenced other well-known geochemists such as Robert Garrels and Werner

Stumm. Sillén was a pioneer, especially when it came to understanding the

chemical composition of oceans. Previously, it was thought that the chemistry

of seawater was determined by weathering from various minerals. Sillén was able

to show that precipitation reactions were also significant, and his hypothesis

was that the composition of seawater could be calculated from nine different

equilibrium reactions. Furthermore, Sillén was very active in the compilation

of thermodynamic data for equilibrium reactions, and in the 1960s was a pioneer

in using computer calculations to process equilibrium data from various

measurement sources. He also published textbooks. He also occasionally worked

for FOA. Sillén was elected in 1964 as a member of both the Academy of Sciences

and the Academy of Engineering Sciences.
