From a fortunate find by a gardening enthusiast in his own backyardis this War of 1812 era cuff button for the Royal Artillery, an other ranks copper alloy versionwith theearlier cannon representation for this button style. While supposedly anachronistic after about 1802, the general type is rathercommon from period military sites in North America up through the War of 1812. This particularexample, however, is hugelyelevated by its specificrecovery location- in a flower bed,on private land close by Fort Meigs in Ohio. Fort Meigs was accosted by aBritish force of regular and provincial troops including Royal Artillery during earlyMay of1813. A siege ensued, punctuated by the unfortunateloss of almost 600 Kentucky militia which had arrived to reinforce the beleaguered fort. While ultimately victorious, the American garrison was subjected to a second Britishbombardment in July - during which Tecumseh\'s indigenous warriors were unsuccessful in a ruse intended to draw the American force outfrom Fort Meigs and into an ambush.There is no discernible back mark, though you get a survivingstand up shank.Condition is quite good though of course not absolutely pristine perfect - judiciously cleaned (though not overly so)by the museum restoration specialist from whom I got it.Devices to the faceare clear. (see photos). The shank iscomplete and well attached. In all a historic artifact thatsaw the elephant on what was then pretty muchthe Americanfrontier. Size is about 17mm.
