Historically significant daguerreotype of Andrew Hutchins Mickle (October 25, 1805 – January 25, 1863) Mayor of New York City from 1846 to 1847. Mickle was a a democrat and was affiliated with the Tammany Hall organization. After his term was up he declined to run again, and instead returned to his tobacco businesses. Sometime in the 1920s this daguerreotype was professionally re-framed by D.B. Butler & Co. of New York - their business label is on the back.
On the back of the frame is a plastic or glass covered window showing the back of the image with \"A.H. Mickle November 1850\" visible.. this could be Mickle\'s actual signature, I haven\'t been able to find an example for comparison. The daguerreotype has never been removed from its 1920s frame.
Portraits of Mickle are extremely scarce, possibly even non-existent outside of the one offered here! The only examples I could find online were two - a painted portrait and a drawn / sketch portrait - this is the only photograph of him.
Dimensions of the frame is 6\" x 4.75\", making this daguerreotype half-plate in size. The underside of the glass is slightly dirty, but apart from a tarnish ring, a few tiny mat abrasions and mold spiders visible under magnification, the plate is in very good condition. Note what appears to be a gold painted watch chain on his coat and pin on his shirt.
