Eucalyptus was first “discovered” in Botany Bay, Australia, by Sir Joseph Banks during Captain Cook’s voyage of discovery in 1770.
Step into the world of early medical practices. Even as early as the First Fleet in 1788, surgeons recognized the healing properties of Eucalyptus piperita, using it for wound healing. This early recognition of its organoleptic properties, similar to those of English Peppermint, paved the way for its later use in antiseptic surgery by Sir Joseph Lister around 1881.
Publications on this use increased and were maintained for other antiseptic purposes, including infectious diseases.
Eucalyptus inhalation was also recommended for colds, flu, and tuberculosis.
Ferdinand von Mueller, Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, was a strong advocate for the antiseptic use of Eucalyptus, possibly influenced by the rich traditional knowledge of the Australian First Peoples.
European Eucalyptus forests were known for clearing malarial districts of “noxious odors” with their “fragrant emanations.” Witness the shift in medical practices as scientific knowledge advanced. The use of Eucalyptus for clearing malarial districts of "noxious odors" with their "fragrant emanations" fell out of favor with the discovery of the mosquito vector for malaria and the improved understanding of germ theory. It was realized that Eucalyptus drained marshy sites and interrupted the mosquito life cycle. Its chemical examination was first mentioned in the Pharmaceutica I Journal in 1870.
Pharmacy labels have become highly sought-after collectibles. Imagine the unique character and historical significance of this antique advertising label adorning your wall, a piece of home decor that not only tells a story but also adds a touch of vintage charm to your space.
