Adopted around 1870, the Gymnastyorka ("Gymnastic Tunic" гимнастическая рубаха) is a very long-lived uniform item of the Russian military.
Usually taking the form of a pullover smock or shirt, the typical gymnastyorka features a button collar and neck and is pulled over the head to don, originally long in length and left untucked but by the era of the Red Army were mostly shortened and worn tucked into the trousers.The standard Soviet Red Army issue M35, M41, M43, and postwar gymnastyorkas had two chest pockets, but Imperial Tsarist-era and privately purchased/tailor made ones from the 1920's-40's can often be seen with one or no pockets, and despite the gymnastyorka officially being replaced in the Soviet Army in 1969 by the M69 "HeBe" uniform, they could continue to be seen worn, especially by Russian reservists and members of aligned militaries, especially the Albanian and Mongolian People's Armies, well into the 1980's.This is a repro, unknown manufacturer shirt in the Soviet olive-green color with bare metal star/hammer & sickle buttons for the collar and cuffs and two larger brass buttons on the shoulders as well as shoulder loops, ready for adding on shoulder board ranks.
If you're savvy enough with thread and needle, you can easily remove the Soviet Hammer and Sickle buttons for basic ones to turn it into a great 1910's Imperial Tsarist WW1 or 1920's Russian Revolution/Civil War reenactment or film piece.The only tag is on the inside seam marked size "52", but I have provided additional measurements in the photos:
Armpit to armpit: 24" (Ideally for a chest no bigger than 47" circumference)
Shoulder to cuff: 26"
Neck to hem: 32.5"It is in great shape, hardly worn, no fading, rips, tears, or stains, only the buttons have some oxidation and verdigris starting to form on them which can easily be cleaned off.This less common pocketless Gymnastyorka would make a great reenactment/filmmaking/airsoft milsim item to keep your precious original from being messed up!
